Today we travelled from Fes to Marrakesh. In total it took us approx 7 hours. We left the fertile rolling green hills behind. They were to be replaced by much more arid flat land with hundreds of palm trees. As we approached Marrakesh we caught sight of the snow capped Atlas Mountains. Marrakesh is definitely the red city. It’s a very attractive city on first sight with wide boulevards & flowering bougainvillea in red, pink & yellow.
After dropping our bags at our hotel Dellarosa we headed to Djemaa el Fna, the famous square which at night comes alive with entertainment; snake charmers, monkeys, musicians, cross dressing belly dancers, acrobats, henna artists & storytellers (which unfortunately were in Arabic). At the back of the square are temporary food stands & by temporary I mean they are completely moved each night.. the tarps, seats, tables, cooking equipment, electricity.
We had a fun dinner of skewers & salad (& bread which is served at every meal) then we spent some time wandering around the square absorbing the atmosphere.
